Why Are Children’s Eye Tests Important?

At Kent Eye Care, we’re proud to offer expert children’s eye examinations in a friendly, relaxed setting that puts young patients at ease. Good vision is vital for learning, development and confidence – and we’re here to support your child’s eyes at every stage of their journey, from babyhood through to their teenage years.

Children often don’t realise they have a vision problem – they may assume that everyone sees the way they do. That’s why routine eye examinations are so important. Many childhood vision issues, such as squint, lazy eye or short-sightedness (myopia), are far easier to correct if caught early.

We recommend all children have their first eye test by the age of 4–5, or sooner if you have any concerns about their sight or eye health.

What Happens in a Child’s  Eye Examination?

Children’s eye tests differ from adult appointments – they’re designed to be more interactive, flexible and age-appropriate. We use specialised charts, symbols and tests that help us check your child’s vision, eye movements, focusing ability and overall eye health – often without the need for any reading.

We’re also trained to spot and manage more complex conditions and can refer quickly to community ophthalmology services if needed.

Myopia Management with Stellest™ Lenses

If your child is becoming more short-sighted, we offer myopia management using Stellest™ spectacle lenses – proven to slow the progression of myopia and help protect their long-term eye health. These lenses are clear, comfortable and designed just like standard glasses – making them ideal for school and play.

Ask our team whether Stellest™ lenses might be suitable for your child.

NHS Entitlement for Children

Children under 16 (and those aged 16–18 in full-time education) are entitled to free NHS eye examinations. If they need glasses, they’ll also receive an NHS optical voucher to help cover the cost of their eyewear. At Kent Eye Care, we offer a stylish and durable range of children’s frames – from fun colours to mini designer styles.
