Lenses and Frames

At Kent Eye Care we use only the highest quality lenses from worldwide renowned companies such as Rodenstock, Nikon, Essilor, Zeiss and Hoya to ensure up-to-date technology and quality

Lens Types

Single vision
These lenses correct a single refractive error with a single focal length. When you are short-sighted (myopia) or long-sighted (hyperopia) a single vision lens is required to correct vision. Single vision lenses can also be used to correct astigmatism

Bifocals
As we age the focussing lens in the eye hardens and losses its flexibility we therefore have problems focusing on near objects this is called presbyopia. If you are already long or shortsighted then two corrections will be required one for distance and one for near vision. Alternatively some people prefer to have the two corrections in a one lens in bifocal form. A bifocal lens contains the main distance area and a shaped segment for near vision. This segment may be rounded, D shaped or even straight across the lens, many sizes are available to suit the patients individual requirements.

Varifocals or progressive lenses

Unlike bifocals, varifocals offer a continuous gradual change in power from the distance portion in the top of the lens to the near portion at the bottom. Varifocals have no visible lines and are available in many different designs to suit different patients individual viewing requirements

Hi index and aspheric lenses

These lenses curve light more easily than standard materials. This allows the lenses to be tougher, lighter in weight, thinner and enable the patient to have increased visual comfort. High index and aspheric lenses are available in Single vision, Bifocals, Varifocals and colormatic.

Colormatic lenses

These lenses are made from materials that have special crystals within them. These crystals allow the lens to react to light. They darken to a sunglass when exposed to light ie sunlight and fade to almost clear when in darker conditions ie indoors. These lenses have the advantage of protecting the eye from harmful Ultra Violet rays. These lenses are available in brown, grey and green. Colormatics are available in single vision, bifocal, varifocal, aspheric and high index forms.

Tints and coatings
All of the above lenses are available with special coatings

Hard Coating
This coating makes the lens tougher more durable and harder wearing

Multi Anti reflection Coating
This coating helps eliminate annoying reflections from the lens surfaces and glare from viewed surfaces i.e. computer screens and artificial light sources i.e. car headlight dazzle enabling improved vision for the patient and enhanced appearance of the spectacles.

Tints
Lenses may be tinted in a variety of colours and shades to help with patient comfort or simply for cosmetic appearance

At Kent Eye Care one of our optical advisors will be happy to explain the various options of lenses and coatings that are available to you and recommend those which would be suitable for your optical requirements.
